EMT Madrid is investing in green hydrogen and CaetanoBus has delivered the first 10 electric hydrogen-powered buses

The Spanish capital's public transport operator - EMT Madrid - held an event last Thursday entitled “Green Hydrogen Leadership - integral cycle application for public transport” having EMT Madrid presented its newest electric hydrogen-powered buses from CaetanoBus.

These 10 buses, which are now about to start to operate in Madrid, reinforce the full zero-emission fleet strategy adopted by EMT Madrid some years ago and establish a new key milestone hydrogen mobility in Spain and reinforces the position of CaetanoBus has a technology pioneer in Spain and in Europe having already sold more than 200 units to various European cities in Europe, mainly in Germany, Spain, France, Portugal and Italy and very soon in Austria. In addition, this order reinforces Caetanobus' partnership with relevant bus operators in the hydrogen field, as far as we could see at the event organized by EMT Madrid on the importance of green hydrogen in public transport.

For EMT Madrid the introduction of this first 10 Caetano FC buses represent also a strong step forward towards decarbonisation. The target is to have in 2030 all the EMT fleet running on zero emission. The buses will be refuelled in the first public green hydrogen infrastructure in a European capital capable to refuel each bus in less than 15 minutes with green hydrogen produced on site through a PEN electrolyser capable to produce 18 kg/h. These buses will also allow a continuous operation of 20h/day.

These first 10 Caetano units represent also a strong bet and investment on diversification of zero emission technologies and a complementary solution to previous investment on battery electric buses
Despite the questions regarding the hydrogen technology, hydrogen buses will continue to play an important role on longer journeys and an alternative to pure battery electric buses. The Caetano H2.City Gold will operate on route 145.

Nuno Lago de Carvalho, Chief Commercial Officer of CaetanoBus, highlights: “Spain is a key market for CaetanoBus, and we are very pleased to deliver more 10 units of our H2. City Gold to a very strategic and important public transport operator as EMT Madrid. Hydrogen mobility is key to decarbonize large bus fleets and is crucial for major European operators like EMT Madrid to combat climate change and meet the targets set by the European Commission"
